What is the secularization thesis?
The secularization thesis predicted that modernization -- urbanization, industrialization, the growth of science and education -- would progressively diminish religion's social and political role. The thesis was the dominant framework in mid-twentieth-century social science. Since the 1980s it has faced sustained empirical challenge: religion has returned to public life, political Islam has transformed international relations, and religious nationalism has reshaped democracies.
This path opens with Weber's The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism, which traces how religious transformation was itself the motor of modernity's disenchantment. Berger's The Sacred Canopy presents the classic sociological argument for secularization as the natural accompaniment of modernization. Taylor's A Secular Age provides the most sophisticated account: secularization is not the disappearance of religion but the transformation of belief's conditions, making faith optional where it was once inescapable.
